StorySongs for Winnemucca from the Children: A Photographic and Musical Celebration of the Land

Long time Shooting the West participant & presenter Mark Vollmer, songwriter-performer Jim Eaglesmith, and Winnemucca-area schoolchildren present their exciting collaboration in a unique blend of photography, local geology, original music & creative writing learned from school residencies hosted by Jim & Mark earlier in the week. The kids, with support from the two artists, will show through their photographs and original songs a deeper understanding of how the landscape of the Winnemucca area supports life in a harmonious way and how audio & visual arts reveal that truth. Parents will not want to miss this!

Mark Vollmer is an award-winning outdoor photographer/writer/instructor and Nevada Arts Council roster artist who delights in sharing his love and knowledge of the craft via instructing & private tutoring, creating photographs & articles for publications, and designing & presenting slide shows. He authored and photographed the best-selling 2003 coffee table book, Tahoe Rim Trail, Exploring the Jewel, and photographed for Mike White’s popular 2017 guidebook, 50 Best Strolls, Walks & Hikes Around Reno. Mark’s 2010 DVD “StorySongs: From the Soul of the American West”, a collaboration matching Vollmer’s photography with original music of Jim Eaglesmith and co-produced by David Blonski, is a Reno favorite and is available in Truckee Meadows outlets. Mark has taught and entertained with his photography classes and presentations for Washoe County Parks, Washoe County School District, Pioneer Center Youth Program, Tahoe Rim Trail Association, Oller Lifelong Learning Institute, Great Basin Outdoor School, Shooting the West photography symposium, and Truckee Meadows Community College, among many others. In 2007, TMCC honored Mark with its Excellence in Teaching award for the Continuing Education Division. Mark also photographs endangered habitats for local non-profit groups. His photographs have hung in galleries in Reno/Sparks, Sacramento, and South Lake Tahoe.

A Minstrel of Healing & Sacred Storyteller, Jim Eaglesmith‘s music is his way of touching gently the Heart longing for itself. Inspiration for his music is derived from the world of antiquity captured in a contemporary moment in time for all to rediscover fresh. His music has been characterized as ‘Acoustic Medicine for the Heart.’ Jim’s music experience began in the 60’s in Los Angeles with a surfer garage band, followed by country rock bands in Texas and Reno, NV, into the early 80’s. Jim began a profound spiritual journey in 1981 after meeting a Chippewa leader that has resulted in an inspired, spiritually focused songwriting & music style. Jim is a founding member of the Mandra performance trio with Pete Fairley and David Blonski; their 2005 CD “Awaken Your Senses” of original instrumental music showcases the best of their multi-faceted talents. Jim’s collaboration with award-winning Cherokee flutist Eric Ray was honored with a nomination for Jim’s single “Under One Sky” at the Indian Summer Music Awards in 2015. Since 1996 Jim has collaborated with longtime friend and photographer Mark Vollmer, performing multi-media programs for schools & community venues to showcase Mark’s outdoor images and Jim’s songwriting. This long time union of talents takes the form of the DVD, “StorySongs, from the Soul of the American West”, and their joint residency with the Nevada Arts Council.
