2019 Astrophotography with Grant Kaye – Wed, Thurs, & Fri

Class description: Want to capture the splendor of the night sky above the stunning landscapes around Winnemucca with your SLR?  Join renowned night photographer Grant Kaye and learn the technique and art of photographing after dark. We will cover:

– How to plan for shooting the core of the galaxy with the Smartphone App Photo Pills Techniques to shoot the Milky Way over landscape elements
– How to shoot multiple exposures to later blend them together
– Techniques for very long exposures to show star trails

We will meet first Wednesday afternoon for several hours of classroom instruction and go over the fundamentals of night photography. Then we will break for dinner and then get back together to photograph the night sky. The class will reconvene for Session 2 on Thursday afternoon, when we will work on processing our images for a few hours. We will go out shooting on the second night, and then reconvene for a final post processing session on Friday morning.

Although we may not be able to shoot all of these types of images due to weather/season, the class will cover strategies for planning and shooting milky way shots, star trails, and multiple exposure blending, with an emphasis on including the landscape in your photos of the night sky.

Grant Kaye – was born on the rural Hawaiian island of Lana’i, and was raised there as well as in California and Pennsylvania.  Pursuit of academic degrees and a career in geology and volcano hazard took Grant to Colorado, Oregon, Hawaii and California, and eventually to New Zealand where he earned a PhD in 2008.

Grant moved from being a scientist in New Zealand to return to Lake Tahoe, where he created maps with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the town of Truckee through 2012.

Photography has always been a fundamental part of Grant’s life, looking back to the lessons he learned in his father’s darkroom in Hawaii while his father was a professional documentary photographer.  As Grant was preparing to leave the town of Truckee, he was cultivating his passion for photography on nights and weekends, and eventually, he gave in and decided that creating imagery and teaching others how to achieve their vision would be his next career.

As a photographer, Grant specializes in landscapes and night-sky photography, motion-controlled timelapse, and creative filmmaking.  Breathtaking landscape photographs in the digital age are a dime a dozen.  When Grant creates photographs, he purposefully seeks out adventure and difficult places instead of joining the crowd and ending up shoulder to shoulder in ” the lineup” at iconic locations.
